Disc one begins and ends with the Aria from the Goldberg\u003cbr\u003e\nVariations (Gould's theme song, sort of). Among familiar Gouldian fare\u003cbr\u003e\nare the Fifth Partita, selected inventions, plus the C major and D\u003cbr\u003e\nmajor Preludes and Fugues from the Well-Tempered Clavier. Some less\u003cbr\u003e\nobvious choices also prove compelling examples of Gould's x-ray Bach\u003cbr\u003e\nstyle: the A minor Italian Variations, the Gigue from the B minor\u003cbr\u003e\nFrench overture, and the Chromatic Fantasy minus its fugue (Gould\u003cbr\u003e\nhated the fugue, and never recorded it!). Disc two contains Gould's\u003cbr\u003e\nsole organ recording, devoted to the first nine movements of The Art\u003cbr\u003e\nof Fugue. If you insert this disc in your computer CD-ROM drive, you\u003cbr\u003e\ncan access a nifty interactive program. It includes full scores, liner\u003cbr\u003e\nnotes, logs from the recording session, and marvelous video footage of\u003cbr\u003e\nGould playing selections from Bach's valedictory opus at the\u003cbr\u003e\npiano. You'll be spellbound as Gould launches with soft, concentrated\u003cbr\u003e\ndeliberation into the final section of the great unfinished fugue\u003cbr\u003e\n(where Bach's name is spelled out in musical notes). At the very\u003cbr\u003e\nmoment Bach's manuscript breaks off, Gould's hunched-over image\u003cbr\u003e\nfreezes in midair.
